LED Grow Lights VS. HPS
Using LED grow lights for your indoor plants is a very efficient method. The reason why LED's work so well is that they produce the light spectrum specifically needed by plants in photosynthesis, primarily in the red and blue spectrum. In comparison HPS (High Pressure Sodium) bulbs produce the full range of the visible light spectrum, including infrared and ultraviolet. These other spectrum's of light are not used by the plants which is an inefficient use of energy.
What are LED's?
Light emitting diodes (or LEDs) are a type of semiconductor which is capable or emitting light at a specific wavelength. LED grow lights consist of a variety of different colors, mostly blue and red, which emits a purple color. This color is the perfect mix of light for your indoor plants.
Why only produce specific colors of a light spectrum for my indoor plants?
Chlorophyll (a and b) and other components in a plant which function to produce energy for plants peak at certain colors of the light spectrum. By utilizing this knowledge we can efficiently provide plants with the right light, keep the same yields and save energy.
LED's also emit virtually no heat where HPS bulbs emit a great deal of it. A good thing for people who are converting to LEDs from other conventional lighting sources is that this means a great deal of difference in growing your plants. With much less heat there is less of a need for fans or other cooling methods. Also, since there is a temperature difference your plants watering schedule might change.
LED's have a very long lifespan. Many LED's last for as long as seven years of continuous use at 24/hours a day! This saves a great deal of money in the long run for the simple fact that you don't have to replace them for such a long time.
LED bulbs also don't need any of the expensive ballasts or reflectors which conventional bulbs need. They work right when they are installed.
You Get What You Pay For
One of the most important things to conciser while looking into investing your money into LED grow lighting is that you get what you pay for. There are some amazing options out there which truly compete with HPS bulbs yet there are many knock offs and low quality lights which are made in China. Don't just believe a manufacturers claims about their own product, make sure to read reviews from other people who have already tried it out.
